 Bimbling

Inspired by the Mustoskiff "Pimp my Skiff" page, which was inspired by the MTV show Pimp my Ride, please send in your custom modifications to BimBLING@b14.org.

Bimbling.... I couldn't actually find a definition of the word in the dictionary, the nearest it gave me was "bumbling"- bum·bled, bum·bling, bum·bles, which is defined as "To move, act, or proceed clumsily."

I'd suggest that this is exactly what happens if you don't do or don't get your boatwork right, so this page is dedicted to getting your B14 to work as well as possible and give you the best ride of your life.

The other important facet of bimbling is, of course, to ensure that your B14 looks the part  and carries the right amount of street cred in the dinghy park. Thus we have cristened this section: "Bimbling".

Please send in all your best tweaks, mods, tricks, fixes, tunes and details so we can compile the ultimate database of best practise. If you have questions about an area that doesn't seem to be covered, please place a note on the chat page and it'll get resolved.

Debadging: The first rule of customisation has got to be "debadging" - so get those ageing RS logos off!

Grip: If you can't stay upright, your boat hasn't got a huge chance. The factory grip deteriorates over time and your boat will need re-gripping. There are a few options, a couple of which are detailed below.

  • Surfboard Wax - just rub it on the hull.
    • Pros: Cheap, Easy, Simple to bosh on.
    • Cons: Only delivers good grip, Messy, Collectes dirt, Gets onto ropes, kit & everything, Needs reapplying regularly to keep the boat sticky.
  • Epoxy & lumps - existing grip needs sanding off, then mix lumps & bepoxy and paint on.
    • Pros: Delivers awesome grip, looks good, stays clean, should last a few years with little attention.
    • Cons: Doing it takes, time & effort. (or cash if you get your boatbuilder to do it)
  • Deck Paint - existing grip needs sanding off, then paint on
    • Pros: similar to the epxoy route
    • Cons: Time & effort but cheaper than epoxy.

Rigging Tack Lines (hulls before GBR755): If you pole desn't go in and out easily, those hoists and drops are a mare. Pre-Ovington UK boats use an inner pole to launch the bowsprit, here's a quick diagram for those who forgot to take notes before they pulled it apart...

Slot Gaskets

  • "Try the soft side of Velcro strapping, glued on using a glue similar to Kwik Grip, i.e. a non contact glue. Use a bit of tapered plywood with sand paper glued to it to clean the slot, and another piece to help with the fiddly narrow parts." - Phil
  • "One of the first jobs we did to our boat was to replace the carpet lining previously used along the top and bottom of the daggerboard slot. Using a contact adhesive (we used Thixofix) we glued strips about 2" wide around the bottom and top of the slots. Try bits of carpet glued to bits of wood and soak them to check that the glue works in a wet environment & use carpet without a backing. I guess that we will replace the carpet at the beginning of each season." - Andy Hay
